Project Alpha Bravo – Siemens, Hull
Project Alpha Bravo is part of an overall £160 million pound investment by Siemens in wind turbine production and installation facilities in Hull. Making the world’s largest blade in commercial operation at 75 metres in length and weighing 25 tonnes each, the team at KeyIS were appointed mechanical services contractor for the 12,300m2 service and logistics facility.
Project Objectives
To design and deliver the mechanical services installations for this building which will house facilities for the service and maintenance of wind turbines as well as the storage of parts and equipment required in pre assembly and operational phases. It is also the logistics hub for the Siemens onshore and offshore business.
Challenges
Being purpose built for a finely defined use there were many client items of equipment that needed to be serviced. Due to the large overhead cranes that were installed, the building had to be built in a phased approach to ensure parts of the building were available for following on providers. Furthermore with Siemens having businesses in the services sector, we had to ensure the BMS system and the like was manufactured by Siemens.
Solution
By adopting a highly collaborative approach at pre-construction stage, the programme and phasing issues were identified and the entire programme and phasing changed to suit everyone’s needs. This was by far one of the most collaborative working projects we have been involved with to date.
The Results
The building was handed over on time and on budget, the facility is now supporting Siemens business in providing large scale green energy projects the world needs. The first offshore wind farm to benefit from this development was the 402 MW Dudgeon farm off the Norfolk coast providing green energy for some 410,000 UK households.
