Nanoco Key Integrated Services


The Project

Nanoco leads the world in the research, development and large-scale manufacture of heavy metal-free nano-materials for use in displays, lighting, solar energy and bio-imaging. At their R & D facility at Manchester University, the requirement was to work with the construction team to design and deliver a working R & D laboratory to further increase their capability.

Project Objectives

The primary objective was to double fume cupboard capacity of the laboratory and provide local exhaust ventilation to a number of other pieces of equipment in the space. A full inventory of specialist equipment to be used was provided to Key so that the relevant mechanical and electrical services could be designed and installed to serve them.


The laboratories were provided with a base build provision from the university for them to fit out their laboratory. As subsequent additions has taken them over this allowance, the central plant had to be modified to cater for the additional duties required. Steeplejacks were sub-contracted by Key Integrated Services to upgrade discharge stacks on the roof of this large building.


Key Integrated Services completed a validation and design process to enable a bespoke solution to be offered. New fume cupboards were specified and installed by Key Integrated Services alongside additions and modifications to the existing LEV and general ventilation systems. Complete new nitrogen and compressed air installations were completed with supplementary heating, cooling, BMS and domestic services installations.

The Results

The project was completed within 12 weeks to minimise disruption to the client and their operations. Nanoco have enjoyed many successes with their research of which Key Integrated Services are overjoyed to have been a part of. Both Nanoco and the University of Manchester have placed further orders with Key Integrated Services as a result of the successful delivery of this scheme.
