ABLE UK, Immingham
The project was built as part of Able Humber Port (AHP), AHP is situated on the South bank of the Humber Estuary, East Coast of the UK, which in recent years has been the UK’s fastest growing port and logistics centre. This was an ideal place for BMW to take ownership of a new 6000m² £25million import base. The large building – 175m long and 38m wide – features a huge workshop with inspection, wash, paint, and repair bays, as well as stores and staff welfare areas.
Project Objectives
This was a design and build mechanical & electrical project consisting of compressed air, LPG, Comfort cooling & Heating, DWS, Vacuum lines, Heating, Welfare facilities, Lighting, Power, Data, fire alarm, Lighting protection, Security, Intruder & door access within a workshop and office facility incorporating services to key equipment within the paint spray booth, wash bays, tyre inflation and inspection bays.
Challenges
The busy port is also used by other manufacturers along with being in the middle of two of the country’s largest oil refineries. Logistically this was challenging, time scales were tight due to the import of the first batch of cars being delivered and the weather conditions added to the challenge with the project being so close to the River Humber.
Solution
The project had to be planned in detail to avoid delays brought on by the weather and large amounts of traffic around the port with minimum disruption to the working port itself, regular meetings, updates and discussions with Able Ports were key to this throughout.
The Results
The project was completed on programme and on budget by our experienced site operatives and specialist sub-contractors in time for the new supply of imported cars from BMWs manufacturing plant in Germany.
